Nielsen對此表示，刺青與惡性淋巴瘤之間的關聯性，可能與人體對刺青油墨的反應有關。「當油墨注入皮膚時，人體會將其判別為不應存在的異物，命令免疫系統將其清除。該過程會使油墨的色素轉移至淋巴結，導致淋巴結病變、甚至引起癌變。」
